At a launch event in California, Apple has announced three new smartphones — iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max. As you might have guessed, the iPhone XS and XS Max are the direct successors of the iPhone X launched last year. The new iPhone XR is replacing the iPhone X, which is the cheapest of all three phones launched this year.
The Apple iPhone XS and XS Max feature a 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch OLED display, which the company is calling Super Retina Display. On the other hand, the iPhone XR features a 6.1-inch LCD display which is named Liquid Retina Display.
Under the hood, all three phones are powered by Apple A12 Bionic chipset, which includes a six-core CPU, a quad-core GPU, and a dedicated neural engine. The neural engine can handle five trillion AI operations per second, compared to 600 million in A11 Bionic.
The A12 chipset is the first 7nm processor to ship. Huawei’s Kirin 980 was the world’s first 7nm processor, but the company is yet to ship phones powered by the Kirin 980 chipset. According to Apple, the A12 Bionic, along with iOS 12, can launch apps 30 percent faster. The company also adds that it should provide real-time machine learning.
The iPhone XS and XS Max comes with improved camera sensors, having two 12MP lenses. Both lenses have optical image stabilization, and the apertures are f/1.8 and f/2.4. The iPhone XR, on the other hand, features a single 12MP sensor at the back.
On the front side, there’s a 7MP sensor with a f/2.2 aperture on all three phones. Just like the previous iPhone, the front-facing camera on the new iPhones is capable of Portrait mode and has even better facial recognition for Face Unlock.
The iPhone XR comes in three variants — 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. The iPhone XS and XS Max also come in three variants — 128GB, 256GB, and a new 512GB storage. All the models are water resistant with an IP68 certificate.
Interestingly, the new iPhone models have support for Dual SIM and Dual Standby, made possible using the eSIM technology. In China, the company will launch the new iPhones with support for two physical SIM cards.
The iPhone XS and XS Max comes in Silver, Space Gray, and Gold colors for a starting price of $999 and will start shipping from 21st September. The iPhone XR, with a starting price of $749, comes in Black, White, Red, Yellow, Coral, and Blue color. It will be available for pre-order from 19th October.
